It was a calm night around camp crystal laje and the forest was peaceful. A rare thing given the legend of the serial killer going around and murdering everyone who sets a foot on the old camp grounds.

one person didn’t know abut this famous legend. He was honestly just trying to find a quick meal. He has evaded all the traps the other has laid out and that seemed mildly concerning.

there are so many creative ways to approach any given situation in bg3 and i remain staunchly ignorant of all of them and do the most obvious thing possible every time. i got an achievement for beating grym without using the forge hammer and was like oh that would've been really clever, wish i'd thought of that instead of standing around it in a circle beating it with clubs until it died

god i just got to the scene where elminster tells gale that mystra is demanding he sacrifice himself for forgiveness and it genuinely broke my heart. gale's solemn acceptance of it and everyone else being absolutely outraged that mystra would even demand such a thing.

I drew my BG3 character!!!

Avalyn Glacis, a skilled drow assassin with Mastery over ice, was devoted to Lolth, atleast until she was tasked to kill some innocent family who found themselves seeking refuge in the underdark. Frustrated by what she believed was a disservice to her abilities she led the family to safety, defying her queens orders just so she could await the drow assassins. As an elite, she knew that Drow assassins are superiorly trained and make for far more interesting fights than the weak and frightened (surface dwellers). After being branded a traitor, Avalyn rejected her loyalty to Lolth, vowing to fight against those strong enough to believe they could subjugate the weak. Her path took a surprise turn when she was captured by mind flayers and infected with a tadpole, intertwining her fate with a rag tag group as she seeks to find a cure and to fight against one of the strongest creatures....an elder brain.

I don't resent A Song of Ice and Fire for itself, per se. I resent it by proxy for all of the "GrItTtY dArK fAnTaSy" we had to slog through for a decade after Game of Thrones became popular, and that is still impacting the way people write fantasy in the modern day (a particular sore spot for me is that Baldur's Gate III is being made by the same people who made the Divinity series and I can already tell that's going to be fucking miserable).

ASOIaF (and early Game of Thrones) was dark, yes, but at its heart it was surprisingly optimistic and idealistic. It was a world in which doing what was good and right was always hard, often unrewarding and would sometimes get you killed, but you should still do it anyway because goddamnit it's the right thing to do. Bad things happened to good people because they wouldn't compromise their own morality, but the books (and the early seasons of the show) never portrayed these peoples' choices as meaningless or worthless.

Writers of lesser talent and vision looked at GRRM's work and saw good people dying for refusing to compromise their morality, and their takeaway from it was "morality is meaningless" and we've been mired in this miserable genre of fantasy that @sahonithereadwolf named "mudcore" for more than a decade now - and worse, even Game of Thrones eventually fell prey to it.

It's not really GRRM's fault people didn't have the correct takeaway from A Song of Ice and Fire but I still can't quite shake the resentment of how it's shaped fantasy fiction over most of my adulthood.
